EpiMed Centre
Associate Professor Tom Karagiannis leads the EpiMed Centre at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and is an Honorary Principal Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Tom completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) at the University of Melbourne in 1998 and a PhD at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2002. He has held research leadership positions at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and has contributed to teaching in pathology and molecular medicine at the University of Melbourne since 1999.
His research focuses on epigenomic medicine and the molecular mechanisms through which lifestyle, nutrition and bioactive compounds influence human health. Through the EpiMed Centre, his research integrates molecular biology, epigenetics and translational science to investigate the mechanisms underpinning prevention, healthy ageing and chronic disease. His work spans fundamental laboratory discovery, biomarker development and the scientific evaluation of evidence-based preventive interventions.
His vision is to establish EpiMed as a leading centre for epigenomic prevention science, translating molecular discovery into evidence-based strategies that improve human health.
