Diabetes complications cohort study

A new cohort study focusing on the development of diabetes complications is currently being developed. It will recruit 2000–3000 people with type 2 diabetes, and aims to better understand the causes of the complications of diabetes. This study will examine not only the classic complications of eye, kidney, nerve and cardiovascular disease, but will also examine emerging complications, such as cognitive decline and frailty.

The study will follow a population-based cohort of participants over time, and will investigate the psychological and behavioural factors involved in the development of complications, as well as the more traditional pathophysiological ones. Central to the study will be the establishment of a biobank of samples that can be interrogated for a variety of novel candidate causes of the complications of diabetes.

This project is being undertaken in collaboration with world-leading researchers at Monash University, the Centre for Eye Research Australia, and Deakin University’s Australian Centre for Behavioural Research in Diabetes.
