Dr Jun Okabe
DVM | PhD, Osaka University
Jun is an expert in the fields of gene delivery system, chromosome and epigenetics research. He has worked in the Human Epigenetics Laboratory with Prof Sam El-Osta.
Jun studied the development of viral/non-viral/chromosomal vectors and completed a PhD (Medical Science) at the Research Institute for Microbial Diseases, Osaka University, Japan. Next he investigated the molecular mechanism of human chromosome stability at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan, and the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), Australia.
Currently Jun has been interested in how 'epigenetic memory' contributes in diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. His Circulation Research(2012) paper reporting the role of lysine methyltransferase Set7 in hyperglycaemic memory, and further lead publication in Nucleic Acid Research(2016) demonstrating that Set7 dependent transcriptional networks in embryonic stem cells are highlight. Most recently, his studies extend to diabetic kidney diseases published in J. the American Society of Nephrology(2024).
Based on his background, Jun has multiple experimental skills including stem cell culture, viral/non-viral gene transfer, animal work, biochemistry and molecular biology. He is also a senior lecturer at Monash University and has supervised over 15 domestic and international students/early carrier postdoctoral researchers.
