Ahmed Abumeis is an Honours student in Biomedicine at the University of Melbourne, with a research focus on angiogenesis and its role in cardiac repair following myocardial infarction. After a heart attack, the formation of new blood vessels is critical for recovery, yet this process is often insufficient, contributing to progression toward heart failure. His work aims to define how angiogenesis is regulated at the level of intercellular signalling, particularly by identifying signalling pathways that activate or inhibit this process over time following injury.

His Honours research applies quantitative proteomic approaches to investigate extracellular vesicle–mediated intercellular signalling in cardiovascular biology, with a focus on defining how distinct extracellular vesicle populations and their molecular cargo regulate angiogenic signalling and cardiac repair. By linking these signals to functional outcomes, his work seeks to distinguish pathways that promote effective vascular regeneration from those that impair repair, providing insight into potential therapeutic targets.

He completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Distinction) at RMIT University, where his research examined Bone Morphogenetic Protein 4 (BMP4) signalling in cancer metastasis, with a focus on cytoskeletal remodelling and tumour cell migration independent of effects on viability or proliferation. He has also contributed to a hospital-based digital health internship with Northern Health, delivered in collaboration with Apple, following his development of a digital health application through an iOS health hackathon. Through his research, Ahmed aims to advance mechanistic understanding of cardiac repair and support the development of targeted, cell-free therapeutic strategies to reduce the risk of heart failure.
