Smarter support for people living with type 2 diabetes
Managing type 2 diabetes is a lot to juggle — and support often comes in short bursts during appointments, rather than when you need it most.
SMART-T2D is a new research project that aims to make self-care easier, more personalised and better connected for people living with type 2 diabetes.
Our Baker-Deakin Department of Lifestyle and Diabetes is developing a smart health system that aims to use your daily health data — like blood glucose, activity, sleep and food — to give you tailored support via an app and voice assistant. It also helps keep your healthcare team in the loop between visits, if you choose to share your updates. Think of it like a digital diabetes ‘ecosystem’ that learns and supports you.
Who can participate?
We're looking for two groups of participants:
- People living with type 2 diabetes
Adults who want to be part of shaping the future of diabetes self-care.
- Healthcare professionals
Clinicians and practitioners who work with people living with type 2 diabetes.
How does it work?
SMART-T2D gives you daily, personalised support to help with the small decisions that matter — when to move, eat, rest or check your levels — all based on your needs and patterns.
The system:
- Gathers information from wearable devices, monitors and your own input.
- Uses artificial intelligence to spot patterns and offer timely advice.
- Delivers reminders and coaching via an app or smart speaker (like Alexa).
- Shares a summary with your health team, if you choose.
- Supports healthy habits — your way, every day.
