Gary Mehigan

Renowned chef and TV personality

With a shared love of healthy food and lifestyle, we’re delighted to have renowned chef and TV personality, Gary Mehigan, as a Baker Institute ambassador.

As well as looking to solve the biggest health challenges in heart disease, diabetes and obesity, the Baker Institute is also highly active in the prevention space. We’re home to hundreds of scientists, clinicians, data scientists, physical activity experts, dietitians and diabetes educators who are all working together to support better health.

That’s why we're so pleased to have Gary, who many know from the hit series MasterChef, on board to help share our evidence-based health and lifestyle information to promote wellbeing and disease prevention.

Gary also has firsthand knowledge of the importance of heart health. As someone living with Atrial Fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder, Gary understands the importance of evidence-based treatment and a healthy lifestyle. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with Gary to help share this trusted information.

“I’m fortunate to have a platform to share information about food and lifestyle and in a world where there’s a lot of noise and myths around what’s healthy and what’s not, it’s important to me to share evidence-based information,” Gary says.

“Heart disease, diabetes and obesity … these are the biggest health challenges in our community and I’m pleased that I can play a part in helping to promote healthy communities.”

“I’ve heard from the Institute’s researchers and clinicians how even small changes can make an enormous difference to your health,” Gary says. For example, this might be as simple as standing up at work or on public transport to break up your sitting time. The Baker Institute’s research shows that just standing more and sitting less improves disease markers of blood pressure and blood glucose.

And when it comes to exercise, they say every bit helps. It doesn’t have to mean running a marathon or completing an ironman, it might be a fast walk around the block or to the shops.

And like Gary we’re fans of convenient food like frozen veggies, which last longer but have the same nutritional benefits. We’re all for quick, hassle-free, healthy meals. And, to help provide that extra culinary inspiration, Gary is producing some healthy recipes for us.
