At the Baker Institute, excellence isn't just expected — it's celebrated.
Behind every breakthrough is a person who refused to stop asking questions. Our awards and recognition programs shine a light on the researchers, students and emerging leaders whose work is shaping the future of heart and diabetes research — and, ultimately, saving lives.
Our awards
Best of Baker
Each year, we recognise the scientific publications that represent the very best of our research output — work that is not only rigorous and innovative, but poised to make a real difference to human health. Winners are selected across three categories: Basic Science, Clinical/Epidemiology and Review.
Bright Sparks
Our Bright Sparks Program supports the next generation of researchers by recognising and rewarding our highest-achieving postgraduate students. Recipients receive financial top-ups in acknowledgement of their outstanding academic achievement and the promise they show as future leaders in the field.
The Paul Korner Medal for Outstanding Achievement
Established in honour of Emeritus Professor Paul Korner — a founding figure in Australian cardiovascular research — this medal is awarded annually to students who demonstrate exceptional scholarship. It recognises not just achievement, but the kind of curiosity and commitment that defines a research career.
The Sir Laurence Muir Prize
The Sir Laurence Muir Prize is one of our most prestigious honours, recognising an emerging research leader who has demonstrated outstanding achievement relative to their career stage and shown clear leadership potential. The recipient also delivers the Sir Laurence Muir Oration — sharing their work and its significance with the wider Baker community.
