This year, we're celebrating 100 years of research impact. And we're just as focused on what comes next: a bold new investment in the next generation of heart treatments.
The Baker Institute is putting $5 million behind a new Centenary Award, created to fast-track research with real potential to change lives.
It's designed to back an innovative project that could transform care across one or more of our four Research Programs: Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Diabetes and Obesity.
Research teams pitched their five-year plans to a panel of research, academic and commercialisation experts. The winner: ATRIA-HF.
The team behind the winning project will identify, validate, and begin developing the first generation of atrial-specific therapies for the most common heart rhythm disorder, atrial fibrillation (AF), and the most common type of heart failure, HFpEF (heart failure with preserved ejection fraction).
Baker Institute Director, Professor John Greenwood says: “Atrial fibrillation and heart failure are two of the biggest heart health challenges of our time. Around the world, nearly 60 million people live with AF, and more than 30 million live with HFpEF.”
“Few treatments exist today, and many current drugs come with serious side effects elsewhere in the body,” Professor Greenwood says.
“We have internationally recognised clinicians and discovery scientists along with a proven track record of translation in this area.
“This is our chance to change that story for thousands of people living with heart rhythm and heart failure conditions.”
Professor Greenwood says the projects presented reflect the bold, visionary thinking of our teams.
