Professor Dianna Magliano has over 20 years of experience in epidemiology, with the majority of her work focused on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and obesity research. She has strong expertise in both epidemiology and biostatistics, and taught epidemiology for 15 years at Monash University.

As the senior epidemiologist of the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study (AusDiab)for more than two decades, she has gained extensive real-world expertise through direct fieldwork and advanced epidemiological analyses. She has also pioneered the linkage of the Australian diabetes registry to administrative data, significantly strengthening the capacity for diabetes-related research in Australia.

More recently, her research has focused on global trends in diabetes incidence and mortality, leading an international consortium of 24 collaborators. This work has demonstrated that the global diabetes epidemic is evolving, with evidence of declining incidence in some high-income countries.

Professor Magliano is passionate about improving outcomes for people living with diabetes. She is particularly interested in understanding the development diabetes complications in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Her current focus is on the natural history of young-onset type 2 diabetes, and she leads the PREDICTION study, a cohort study recruiting people with young adult-onset type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Internationally, Professor Magliano is highly regarded for her leadership and contributions. She serves as an Associate Editor of Diabetologia, was President of the International Diabetes Epidemiology Group (2015–2017), and is Co-Chair of the 11th edition of the International Diabetes Federation Diabetes Atlas. She is also a member of the T1DIndex team, which is advancing global measurement of the type 1 diabetes burden.
