Gejun (Alex) Niu is a PhD student under the supervision of Prof David Kaye, A/Prof Bing Wang and Dr Ruth Magaye. His research focuses on developing novel anti-fibrotic and anti-inflammatory therapies for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). By establishing and utilising clinically relevant animal models of HFpEF to study its pathophysiology, identify novel biomarkers, and explore potential therapeutic interventions.

Alex graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy from Tianjin Medical University in 2021. He then earned his Master’s degree in Medicinal Chemistry from Sun Yat-sen University in 2024, where he explored novel bioactive compounds based on the multi-functionalisation of carbene.
