Lauren Burnham

BEx&SpSc, Deakin University | MClinExPhysiol, Deakin University

Lauren completed her Masters of Clinical Exercise Physiology in 2019 and has been practicing since then in hospitals, privately in clinic and in the research space. Working in a range of areas has meant Lauren has worked with clients and participants with a diverse range of injuries, conditions and diseases. This has been invaluable in the way Lauren has continued to practice as an Exercise Physiologist; ensuring she considers each person individually as a whole and doesn’t just focus on the most prominent complaint or condition.

Since moving to full time at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute Lauren has contributed to the Cardiometabolic Health and Exercise Physiology lab by developing and delivering exercise interventions for several research studies. She is passionate about delivering exercise that is evidence-based and contributing to developing better frameworks and guidelines for clinical populations where exercise guidelines currently don’t exist or are unclear.

Lauren has special interests in oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic disease and from her own interests in endurance sports likes helping others achieve their exercise related goals, whatever they may be. Within the oncology space Lauren believes in supporting patients through their treatment by encouraging and guiding them to continue to exercise to help manage symptoms and side effects; and ensure the best health outcomes post treatment. Lauren has also worked closely with a high number of Long Covid patients over the last couple of years. She is passionate about helping contribute to developing better models of care for patients suffering from this condition as well as the likes of chronic fatigue syndrome.

Lauren strongly believes that exercise can and should be available to people from all walks of life, and additionally all people can reap the benefits of it. She loves spending time with participants and patients who are new to exercise, helping them to develop healthy habits, empower them to do something that’s challenging, and maybe even get to a point of enjoying exercise.

As well as continuing research work within the Cardiometabolic Health and Exercise Physiology lab, Lauren see’s patients privately at the Baker Specialist Clinics who can be self-referred or referred by a medical professional.
