As a cardiologist and a neuroscientist, Professor Esler is fascinated with the link between mental stress and its impact on the nervous system. 'We know that anxious states can in some cases, lead to heart events', he explains. 'But through breathing, cognitive behaviour therapy and more appropriate life choices, we can manage these states.' Many of his patients with high blood pressure also experience mental health issues. He says, 'It’s a natural link. We need to closely examine the connection between the brain and the body so we can develop a more holistic approach to treating these conditions'.
