The Healthy Hearts Clinic is a free service to the community thanks to the generosity of the Munzer family
A visit to the The Dina & Mark Munzer Healthy Hearts Clinic helps you identify and address your risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Your results are available at the time of your appointment and your nurse will discuss these with you.
How is my risk assessed?
There are many ‘risk factors' associated with cardiovascular disease. During your visit a nurse will assess the following factors:
- risk of developing diabetes
- physical inactivity level
- smoking status
- blood pressure
- excess weight
- blood cholesterol and other blood fats levels.
Once these factors are known, your absolute risk of a major cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack, in the next 5 years can be calculated.
What does a Healthy Hearts check involve?
It is a health check, conducted by trained nurses. As part of your assessment we will:
- Ask a series of questions to assess lifestyle factors and your medical history.
- Measure your blood pressure, height and weight.
- Take a small blood sample (by finger prick) for cholesterol and blood sugar level measurement.
The visit, including all paperwork, should take 30 to 45 minutes.
Based on your results we will calculate your cardiovascular risk score and let you know your absolute risk and how this compares to other Australians of the same age and gender. The nurse will also provide you with expert dietary and physical activity advice to help you reduce that risk.
Individuals at increased risk of cardiovascular disease who require further follow-up may be referred to the Baker Specialist Clinics. We have specialists in the following areas:
- exercise testing and training
Support our world class research
With your approval, the health information we collect during your visit can be securely stored for Baker Institute scientists to access. This data is valuable and assists with their research into the causes of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Research projects underway at the Baker Institute have the potential to change the face of diabetes and heart disease prevention and management. Often, this ground-breaking research would not be possible without volunteers participating in clinical trials.
Visit the Clinical research trials section for more information on participating.
