Student research project

Supervisor(s): Professor Karlheinz Peter, Alfred Deakin Professor Tracey Bucknall and Professor Andrea Driscoll

Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and Deakin University Joint Scholarships

A PhD scholarship is available for this project. Successful applicants will be supervised by Faculty of Health at Deakin University and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. The PhD student will initiate and conduct research on the research topic outlined below.

Project summary

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a preventable and treatable medical condition that includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). The aim of this project is to investigate clinical decision-making surrounding VTE prevention and treatment in two Victorian Health Services

Differences in VTE policies and intervention strategies (including their evidence-base) and patient outcomes will be examined and compared in several patient cohorts. Clinicians' decision making will be explored to understand their preferences, trade-offs and influences in making VTE treatment decisions.

By understanding the influences on clinical decisions, electronic decision supports can be designed to prompt VTE decisions and reduce the variation and suboptimal outcomes evident in recent Australian studies. Highly relevant recommendations for policy, decision supports and implementation will be the expected outcomes of the PhD dissertation.
