Ayuba Issaka is a postdoctoral researcher and a chronic disease epidemiologist at the Non-Communicable Diseases and Implementation Science laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute.
Ayuba’s research focus is on the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at a population level, with a focus on cardiometabolic disease and its correlates. To complete his doctoral research, Ayuba has utilised the WHO STEPs survey data to explore the epidemiology of type 2 diabetes and impaired glucose glycemia in five West African countries.
During his PhD, Ayuba collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders within West Africa, including the WHO, the West Africa Health Organization, and with the Ministries of Health for Burkina Faso, Mali, Benin, Ghana, and Liberia.
Ayuba has undertaken research on chronic disease prevention with various organisations, including Deakin University, Hume City Council, and the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne with a focus on cultural and linguistically diverse (CALD) populations.
As a Research Fellow at Deakin University, Ayuba has contributed to many other interdisciplinary projects including Epigenetics and on the developmental origin of health and disease (DoHaD), and NCDs.
His research interests also include the epidemiology of chronic diseases, the intersection of implementation science, and on the emerging technological platforms for the prevention and self-management of cardiometabolic disease and its correlates.
