We recently linked the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) to the Australian and New Zealand Dialyses and Transplant registry (ANZDATA), death index and the pharmaceutical benefit scheme data over the period from 2002–14. This has provided a powerful, large-scale population-based dataset which can be used to investigate a range of research questions. The data comprises over 3,000,000 Australians with diabetes, chronic kidney disease and death outcomes and medication use over 13 years.

With this linked dataset, we will answer a range of questions. We will be able to:

  1. Measure the trends in incidence of endstage kidney disease (ESKD) in diabetes.
  2. Identify the role of diabetes in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
  3. Explore patterns and trends in diabetes medication usage according to demographic and socioeconomic strata.

Future project will explore the feasibility of linking this data to other datasets.
