Kathya Fernando

Kathya is a Research Assistant within the Cardiometabolic Health and Exercise physiology laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. She is currently involved in the PARsing PEM study which examines the response of the autonomic nervous system to exercise and its link with post-exertional malaise (PEM) in people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME.CFS). Furthermore, Kathya has an interest in investigating the immunology in blood disorders and cardiovascular diseases.

Kathya completed her Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin University with a major in Infection and Immunology. During this time, she published her first paper which looked at the relationships between maternal diet during pregnancy and the epigenetics of the baby. Previously she has also led a Long Covid project which has given her the experience enabling engagement and dealing with patients with chronic disease.
