Dr Sarah Alexander
PhD, Deakin University | BExSpSci(Hons), AES
Sarah is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Accredited Exercise Scientist within the Cardiometabolic Health and Exercise Physiology laboratory at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute. She is currently involved in the “ETHEL” study, a clinical trial investigating the effects of testosterone treatment on exercise tolerance in women with stage B heart failure. Sarah also aims to investigate the cardioprotective role of different sex hormones in women through epidemiological, interventional and mechanistic research.
Sarah completed her PhD at Deakin University in 2023, where she investigated the role of testosterone in the regulation of skeletal muscle in females. Specifically, Sarah was interested in whether the amount of testosterone an individual has determines their muscular response to anabolic stimuli. During this time, Sarah also explored the effect of testosterone treatment on anabolic signalling pathways in female skeletal muscle in vitro. This research has implications for current eligibility regulations for females in sport and has added to our current understanding of the role of androgens in the regulation of female muscle. More broadly, Sarah is interested in the sex-specific differences in the regulation of muscle and the manifestation of disease.
