Ilana Souza Correa
Ilana Souza Correa is a PhD student specialising in molecular biology and epigenetic research related to type 2 diabetes. His work is driven by a dedication to understanding the underlying mechanisms of chronic diseases, and he contributes to the field by uncovering insights into the potential therapeutic applications of his research.
He holds a degree from Cruzeiro do Sul University in Brazil, where his passion for research began with a project studying the effects of a compound on acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells.
Currently, Ilana's PhD research focuses on the effects of bone marrow transplantation in non-obese type 2 diabetic rats. Working under the guidance of Professor Renata Gorjão and Laureane Masi, he explores how this procedure could offer novel insights into treatment methods. As part of his studies, Ilana is also conducting research at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, where he assists in examining epigenetic changes in Thai type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with or without coronary heart disease, under the supervision of Professor Sam El-Osta and Dr Ishant Khurana.
Through these projects, Ilana aims to contribute to the broader understanding of diabetes and its complications, employing technical expertise in epigenetics.
