Three of our researchers have been recognised for their excellence in research work with significant Baker Institute awards.
Dr Yow Keat Tham, a Group Leader and Baker-La Trobe Senior Research Fellow in the Metabolomics lab, was awarded one of our Institute’s most prestigious awards. Yow Keat was announced as the recipient of the 2023 Sir Laurence Muir Prize, which recognises outstanding achievement by an emerging leader in heart and diabetes research.
His research focuses on lipids and examining how they change in the context of heart disease, and in particular, if their levels can be modulated to find a new way to treat heart disease.
Clinician researcher and PhD Fellow, Dr Louise Segan, took out the significant Paul Korner Medal for her work in clinical and population health research. Louise's research is focused on optimising outcomes in people with the most common heart arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure.
PhD candidate, Austin Lai, was also a recipient of a Paul Korner Medal for his discovery-based research.
Austin's research aims to enhance our understanding of how therapeutically targeting the protein Piezo1 may reduce endothelial dysfunction, which is as an implication for vascular ageing and coronary artery disease.
The Paul Korner Medals are for outstanding achievement and recognise excellence in student scholarship. The late Professor Paul Korner AO was Director of the Baker Institute from 1975–1990 and was internationally renowned for his research in hypertension and atherosclerosis.
