While heading home from work one day, Devadas sensed something amiss as he walked to his car. He found himself struggling to breathe, prompting an immediate visit to his GP. Eventually what followed was an alarming discovery, three severe artery blockages requiring urgent triple bypass surgery.

Devadas with his familyAt just 50 years old, Devadas, a devoted husband and father of two, faced a life-threatening health crisis that deeply concerned his family. The weight of the impending surgery, coupled with the uncertainty of waking up afterward, loomed heavily on his mind.

“I knew it was not a small operation and I was worried what would happen if I didn’t wake up. All the family I have in Australia are my wife and kids. I remained motivated to get through it for my family, and I went through the surgery and recovery doing as much as I could to get back to good health. I was very persistent to get well, but even so, my family was extremely worried and fearful of the operation”.

Coronary artery disease claims more lives globally than any other disease, and it has taken a toll on Devadas quality of life, imposing breathing difficulties, and even simple movements tax his body. The hereditary condition can be traced back to his father who also underwent bypass surgery in his 50s.

In 1996 Devadas was diagnosed with diabetes, and statistically is among a staggering 80% of people with diabetes who go on to develop some form of cardiovascular disease.
Despite these challenges, Devadas is working to improve his fitness with walking and a good diet, yet there are days when his breathing is still strained. He recognises the importance of medical research to uncover new life saving treatments and preventative strategies for coronary artery disease.

“A lot of people suffer from the same issues. It can be hereditary, because of lifestyle issues or a result of ageing. Life is a one-time gift, and we need to cherish each day, so we need to support medical research, and pave the way for a brighter heathier future for generations to come”.

Devadas's journey underscores the importance of early detection, proactive health management, and the need to support medical research in combating coronary artery disease to create a better future for the next generation.
